Woodthorpe Church of England Primary School

A Typical Day in Reception

We aim to provide a balance of adult-led learning with enriching play-based experiences. This approach not only fosters a love for learning but also helps our children develop essential skills in a nurturing environment.

Throughout the day, children will engage in a variety of activities, including phonics and maths, which follow a structured and systematic programme of learning. These adult-focused sessions are complemented by ample opportunities for child initiated learning, where children can explore, create, and learn at their own pace. Our role as educators is to carefully support and facilitate this play, ensuring that each child feels encouraged, valued, and included.

We are committed to providing an inclusive environment where every child's individual needs are considered. We recognise that all children develop at different levels and rates, and we are dedicated to helping them access learning that is appropriate and challenging for them.

In Reception, we place great emphasis on Personal, Social, and Emotional Development (PSED) as well as Communication and Language skills. These foundational skills are integral to each child's overall growth and help them to thrive in both academic and social settings, creating life long learners. The children are highly motivated and engaged, participating in activities that promote teamwork, communication, empathy, and sharing.

Our Christian ethos underpins our approach, ensuring that we create a safe, welcoming space where all children feel respected and accepted. We believe that nurturing these values is essential for fostering a strong sense of community within our classroom.
