English
The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written language, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.
(DfE 2013)
Reading, writing, speaking and listening together form the key components of human communication. We learn from one another through our ability to communicate, and so English has a significant role in all the learning taking place at Woodthorpe Church of England Primary School.
Overall, our English curriculum provides our pupils with the necessary life skills for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences they will undoubtedly face in life beyond Woodthorpe. We aim to nurture in the children a love of literature and language, and the confidence to continue reading and writing throughout their lives.
With parental support, we want our children at Woodthorpe C of E to:
- speak clearly and confidently in any situation
- read fluently for both pleasure and information
- listen actively and respond appropriately, developing knowledge and opinion
- write clearly and with confidence in any given genre
- use spelling rules, phonics and grammar accurately
- be able to proof-read their own work and make amendments and improvements
- understand what they need to do to move their learning forward
