Class 5
Welcome to Class 5
MissHall
In our class we have Year 5 and 6. We offer a varied and balanced curriculum in Class 5, aiming for every child to reach their full potential. A typical day includes Reading, SPaG, Mathematics (following the WhiteRose scheme) and English, and two afternoon subjects. We are lucky to have PE delivered by experts from Chesterfield Football Club. Each term, our work is formed around an exciting new topic. See details of these outlined below:

Autumn 2024 - The Dynamic Dynasties
This project teaches children about the fascinating history of ancient China, with a special focus on the Shang Dynasty. They will learn about the daily life, culture, and achievements of the Shang people, including their art, writing, religion, and inventions. The project also explores the first five Chinese dynasties, helping children understand their lasting legacies—some of which can still be seen in the world today. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and research, students will develop a deeper appreciation for China’s rich history and its influence on modern society.
Forces and Mechanisms
This project teaches children about the forces of gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction, with children exploring their effects. They learn about mechanisms, their uses and how they allow a smaller effort to have a greater effect.
Earth and Space
This project teaches children about our Solar System and its spherical celestial bodies. They describe the movements of the Earth and the other planets relative to the Sun, the Moon relative to Earth, and the Earth's rotation to explain day and night.
Colour in Landscapes
This project teaches children about colour theory by studying tints, shades and tones. They learn about the features of landscapes before using this knowledge to create landscape paintings.
Investigating our world
This essential skills and knowledge project teaches children about locating map features using a range of methods. They learn about the Prime Meridian, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), and worldwide time zones and study interconnected climate zones, vegetation belts and biomes. Children learn about human geography and capital cities worldwide before looking at the UK motorway network and settlements. They carry out an enquiry to identify local settlement types.
Taotie
This project teaches children about the significance and art of the taotie motif, including ancient and contemporary casting methods.
