Welcome to Early Years at Woodthorpe C of E Primary
At Woodthorpe, our Early Years provision brings our whole-school vision to life:
“Learning and growing together to be the best we can be,” and "Encouraging one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing".
We place a relational approach at the heart of everything we do, knowing that strong, trusting relationships are the foundation for all learning. Through these connections, children feel safe, valued and ready to explore, enabling them to develop confidence, independence and a genuine love of learning.
Our culture is shaped by our CARE Code – Care, Aspire, Resilience and Enjoyment – which guides children to develop positive attitudes, strong motivation and pride in their achievements.
We are committed to securing stronger foundations from the very start, recognising the significant impact of high-quality Early Years education on later learning, wellbeing and life chances. Our curriculum is based on Development Matters, and high quality research, carefully adapted to meet the needs of our cohort and reflect our local context and community, ensuring all children are supported to thrive.
Our practice is underpinned by the Seven Key Features of Effective Practice, ensuring high-quality interactions, carefully considered environments and meaningful learning experiences. Central to this is the role of the adult as a skilled facilitator of learning—modelling positive behaviours, language and thinking, and responding sensitively to children’s needs to move learning forward.
Our pedagogy is built on a balanced approach across the Early Years combining:
- Adult-focused teaching to introduce key knowledge and skills
- Adult-guided learning through purposeful enhancements within continuous provision
- Child-initiated play, where children lead their own learning and exploration
This balance ensures children learn both independently and with guidance, maximising opportunities for deep thinking, curiosity and sustained engagement.
We place a strong emphasis on early language development and reading, recognising these as key drivers for success. Through rich, language-filled environments and structured teaching, we ensure children develop the communication skills and vocabulary they need to access learning across the curriculum and beyond.
Together, these approaches prepare children not only for the next stage of their education, but for life—developing confident, resilient and motivated learners who are ready to continue their journey as lifelong learners.
